05: Lueg monument

At 890 meters, the «Lueg» offers a magnificent view of the Bernese Alps. Cheese was also first produced on the alp and only in the valley from the end of the 18th century. The successful export of Emmental cheese brought prosperity to the dairy farmers, to which their spacious homes still bear witness today. The Lueg memorial commemorates the 54 Bernese cavalrymen who fell victim to the influenza epidemic of 1918. The Alpine plaque was erected in the 1920s by Pastor Henzi from Hasle. Return to the junction, turn left and continue along Luegstrasse towards Affoltern until you reach the Emmental show dairy.
