10: Cheese transportation by water

From the 17th century onwards, storable cheese was increasingly exported. Water was suitable for larger loads and the Emme made the Emmental a suitable starting point for exports. Cheese was transported over the passes and downstream on «whey rafts» to Germany and beyond. For a while, the loaves were packed in wooden tubs, but this was banned in the middle of the 17th century due to the large demand for wood - the quantities exported were obviously considerable! In addition to cheese, other important export goods were schnapps, linen and animals. 1st day tour And continue on cycle route 99 to Burgdorf Castle 2nd day tour Now follow cycle route 24 to Emmenmatt.
