11: Cheese transportation by road and rail

Cheese was transported over the mountains using carriers, pack animals and horses. Towards the end of the 19th century, cheese merchants were able to send their goods by freight train - in ice-cooled wagons - to Basel, where they were shipped on to international ports. From the middle of the 20th century, trucks finally replaced the freight trains. Today, around 25,000 tons of Emmentaler AOP are delivered all over the world every year. Now follow cycle route 24 over the Emme towards Langnau. In Langnau, follow Bernstrasse/Veloroute 24 to the next crossroads and then follow the signs to the Chüechlihuus regional museum on Bärenplatz. There you will find information about the former cheese trade.
