21: Of castles and cheese

Burgdorf Castle was built in the 11th century at the highest point of the town and was extended around 1200 by Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen to become the imposing residence it is today. It is the largest and best-preserved Zähringen castle complex in Switzerland and is home to a museum, the Swiss Youth Hostel Burgdorf and a restaurant.

But let's get back to the cheese. «Emmental cheese» was first mentioned by name in 1542. Due to competing products, the Swiss Cheese Union introduced the «Switzerland» trademark in 1929, and the protected designation of origin «Emmentaler AOP» has existed since 2006. Today, almost 20,000 tons are exported every year. So nothing can happen to you abroad. And if you ever feel homesick there, do as Osolemirnix does in «Asterix in Corsica». He smells a piece of cheese and brings back a piece of home. This is also guaranteed to work with Emmentaler AOP!

You have now reached the end of the cheese route. Now follow cycle route 99 to Burgdorf railroad station. We look forward to seeing you again soon - in the Emmental!
